Taika Waititi Confirms Thor: Love and Thunder Will Feature Two Thors

Published

Marvel Studios is now set to take the world by storm with the fourth Thor film in the MCU, one that will bring back a popular character and an actress who could give the original God of Thunder a run for her money in the franchise. However, many fans are still confused by the reveal of Thor: Love and Thunder as well as the return of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster/the Mighty Thor.

Recently, Thor: Love and Thunder filmmaker Taika Waititi spoke with Entertainment Tonight at Disney’s D23 Expo to clarify a major detail about the upcoming movie, indicating that Thor Odinson (Chris Hemsworth) will not lose his status while Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) will instead join him in the pantheon.

“[She is] a Thor. There is still the other Thor, the original Thor [played by Chris Hemsworth],” said Taika Waititi before adding, “She is not called Female Thor. In the comics, she is called the Mighty Thor. It comes from that comic run. I could not be happier and more excited.”

In the recent storylines from Marvel Comics, Jane Foster led the title The Mighty Thor after the original character became Unworthy, because of some dubious machinations by Nick Fury. Odinson was then unable to lift the hammer Mjolnir, and its power was given to Jane Foster, who later took on the mantle and joined the Avengers.

A separate title was launched called The Unworthy Thor, in which Odinson wields his ax Jarnbjorn, which looks very similar to his hammer/ax Stormbreaker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Obviously, this weapon also has the same name as Beta Ray Bill’s hammer, but that is a story for a different time.

Taika Waititi previously explained how he was able to convince Nataline Portman to return. The director partially attributed it to the fact that he wanted to make the actress into a full-fledged superhero eventually.

How Thor Became Unworthy in Marvel Comics

Published

on

By

Thor has become unworthy of holding the Mjolnir in both Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for very different reasons. The character’s debut in the MCU centered around his exile to Earth as a mortal and his unworthiness to lift the Mjolnir. In the comics, this was explored deeper as the God of Thunder even got a limited series literally titled The Unworthy Thor.

Thor’s ability and worthiness to use the Mjolnir was a central theme in his introduction to the MCU, eventually with audiences learning that anyone worthy of it can wield the hammer, such as Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and Captain America in Avengers: Endgame (2019). This is pretty the same in Marvel Comics: only those worthy of Mjolnir will be able to use it, but the reason behind Thor’s unworthiness had nothing to do with arrogance.

Following the Original Sin storyline in 2014, Nick Fury, with the powers of the Watchers, whispered something to Thor and that caused him to lose the ability to use the Mjolnir, making way for another worthy character who soon took the name (and powers) of Thor: Jane Foster. After this, Thor continued his own journey under the name “Odinson.” Fury’s words were not unveiled until the limited series The Unworthy Thor in 2016, and with them what truly made Thor no longer being able to lift the hammer.

Nick Fury said, “Gorr was right,” which connect Thor, God of Thunder, where Gorr the God Butcher goes after the Gods as he believes they’ve forgotten to help those in need and, because of that, they should die. Back then, Thor realized that he and the rest of the Gods aren’t worthy of admiration as they’re “vain and vengeful creatures,” making it impossible for him to use the Mjolnir. Before that revelation, Odinson had the chance to take the Ultimate Mjolnir, but he decided not to. Instead, he channeled the power of it, returning Asgard to its rightful place after the events in Secret Wars, especially with the help of Beta Ray Bill. After keeping the hammer away from the Collector and saving the kingdom, Odinson would have most likely been worthy again, but these actions would not have changed his situation that much if he still found himself unworthy – not only of the Mjolnir but the love and admiration of mortals and his overall role as a God.

unworthy thor

Now with Thor: Love and Thunder officially part of the MCU’s Phase 4, and Natalie Portman returning as Jane Foster and taking on the role of Thor along with Chris Hemsworth, it looks like Marvel Studios is taking some ideas from the events in Original Sin and The Unworthy Thor to make this change. However, what remains unclear is whether they’ll make Thor Odinson unworthy, perhaps instead proving that Jane Foster has the qualities that make her a person worthy of Mjolnir. After all (as mentioned above), Vision and Captain America were still able to use the hammer while Thor was worthy.

We’ll go to see when Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters November 5, 2021.

Taika Waititi Reveals Why Natalie Portman Returns for Thor: Love and Thunder

Published

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally exploring many of the legacy heroes that fans have been enjoying for years in the comics world. And now, with Thor: Love and Thunder premiering in 2021, we can look forward to another character wielding the Mjolnir and becoming the new God of Thunder. The upcoming film will also mark the return of Natalie Portman to the franchise as Jane Foster, as known as the Mighty Thor.

Kevin Feige, Taika Waititi, Natalie Portman, and Chris Hemsworth at the San Diego Comic-Con 2019.

Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder screenwriter and director, previously spoke about his update on the latest Marvel Studios film. He unveiled how he convinced Natalie Portman to come back to the franchise with one simple question.

“So I just said to her, ‘Are you interested in coming back to this thing, but doing something really different?’” Taika Waititi shared to Variety. “Because of another thing, no one wants to keep repeating themselves and wants to play the same characters all the time. So I think for her, just coming back reprising that character but in the whole fresh new way is what I really think would interest anyone. Especially, in most of these films, if you are not a superhero, do you really want to keep doing that? I mean, I would not. But I’d want to come back and change things up.”

It is a surprising sequel to Thor: Ragnarok, especially after the events of Avengers: Endgame, but Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that it has been in the works for a long time, and there was one moment convincing Natalie Portman to return to the MCU – and it had to do with Russell Dauterman and Jason Aeron’s run on The Mighty Thor.

“We love the story. It is one of the best comic runs recently,” Kevin Feige told CNN. “[Taika Waititi] would flip through and read that run while he’s doing Ragnarok. I think when Taika agreed to come back and do another Thor, he was like, ‘How do we…?’ This is a very big movie that will be folding in a lot of elements. That’s a hugely important part of it. So he pitched it to us, and we were totally in. We loved it. We had been in touch with Natalie. She is part of the MCU family, and we put her and Taika together. It just took one meeting, and she agreed to do it.”

The president of Marvel Studios also explained the reasons behind the Phase 4 slate, hinting that it is teeing up an even grander plan for the future of the dominant, multi-billion dollar franchise.

“There’s always [a bigger version]. And it sort of only comes into views for others as it all solidifies,” Kevin Feige said when asked about Phase 5 films. “So ask me this again at the end of 2021. But I’ll say, post Endgame, we were always about the new, doing what we’ve always tried to do in the Phase One, Two, and Three, which is doing a film of the character you already knew, [like] Black Widow, in a way that you don’t expect.”

With Natalie Portman set to reprise her role as the new Thor, we could be ushering in a whole new wave of the New Avengers. But that is a story for another time.

Idris Elba Wants to Play Heimdall Again

Published

on

By

Like most of the stars of the Thor films, Idris Elba seemed to be pretty burnt out on the Asgardian adventures a couple of years ago. However, things changed drastically for franchise lead Chris Hemsworth when director Taika Waititi was brought on to direct Thor: Ragnarok. The God of Thunder instantly became a champion of fun and humor, and Chris Hemsworth quickly expressed that he was ready to reprise the character past Avengers: Endgame. And Idris Elba apparently had the same sort of turnaround after Ragnarok.

During an appearance on ABC Radio, Idris Elba was asked about his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to this point and in the future. Heimdall, the keeper of the Bifrost and Thor’s best pal, was tragically killed in the opening scene of Infinity War, just minutes before Loki also met his end. Despite the death of his character, it looks like Idris Elba is actually open to the idea of returning to Marvel Studios.

“Of course,” Idris Elba said of his desire to come back. “Listen. Heimdall is essentially part of the god family. So you know, he essentially could be alive. I am just saying! I’m just putting it out there. The Heimdall character goes away back into, you know, the Thor mythology. And I’m sure there’ll be an interesting way to bring that alive. Of course, I would. Yes.”

idris elba heimdall

If Marvel wants Idris Elba back (if not, who would?), there are a couple of opportunities to do so. The most obvious of these being the Loki TV series on Disney+, which will have Tom Hiddleston starring in the titular role. The show will take place in an alternate reality that Loki accidentally created when he removed the Space Stone from the main timeline. And in that version of the universe, Heimdall is still alive and could easily be worked into the story.

Moreover, there are also two feature movie opportunities for Idris Elba as Heimdall to show up. Taika Waititi’s film in 2021, Thor: Love and Thunder, makes plenty of sense. But let’s remember the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 3. The story may not allow it, but Idris Elba is about to begin work with Guardians filmmaker James Gunn on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC. And if the two get along well, James Gunn could look for a way to get Heimdall in his next movie.

In the meantime, we can see Idris Elba in the now showing Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.

“Thor: Love and Thunder” Director Taika Waititi Has Completed the Script

Published

By

Finally, Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has turned in a completed script ahead of an early production start in 2020, Deadline reports.

The returning Thor: Ragnarok filmmaker will first write and direct an unidentified project for now Disney-owned Fox Searchlight before coming back to the MCU, where Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) will wield the mighty power of the Asgardian Avenger.

Natalie Portman as Jane Foster at Hall H Comic-Con 2019.

Inspired by Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman’s Mighty Thor in Marvel Comics, the fourquel borrows from what Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige called “one of the best comic runs recently.”

“[Taika Waititi] would flip through and read that run while he was doing Thor: Ragnarok,” Feige said. “And I think when he agreed to come back to do another Thor, he was like, ‘How do we…?’ This is a very big movie that will be folding in a lot of elements,” Kevin Feige told CNN.

“This is a hugely important part. He pitched it to us. And we were totally in. We loved it. We had been in touch with Natalie [Portman]. She is part of the MCU family, and we put her and Taika together. It took one meeting, and then she agreed to do it.”

As the final movie of Marvel Studios’ Phase 4, unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con in July, Thor: Love and Thunder is part of Marvel’s efforts to embrace “the new” in the wake of the Infinity Saga-ending Avengers: Endgame that brought a close to this 11-year first chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“There is always [a bigger vision]. And it only sort of comes into view for others as it all solidifies,” Kevin Feige said when he was asked about Phase 5.

“So ask me that again at the end of 2021. But I’ll say, post Endgame, we were always about the new. We were about doing what we always tried to do in Phase One, Two, and Three. That is doing a film of character you already know, [like] Black Widow, in a way that you don’t expect.”

Joining Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman is returning Thor: Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. She was informally crowned the new king of Asgard in the last Avengers: Endgame.

Thor: Love and Thunder premieres in theaters on November 5, 2021.

UPDATED: Taika Waititi took to Twitter to debunk that information, joking that he was as surprised as anyone to learn that it was done.

“Oh that’s cool,” the filmmaker wrote. “I never cease to surprise me! (the title page is complete).”

As we know now, that is not the case. With production not far away for the 4th Thor film, it is entirely likely that the script seems pretty far along at this point. Taika Waititi joked about the title page, making it seem as though all he has written is just the title. However, it is more likely he was just admitting that was the only part of the script that was totally finished. With the press tour for Jojo Rabbit and production on Next Goal Wins coming up before the end of this year, the script for Thor: Love and Thunder will need to get wrapped up sooner rather than later.

“Avengers: Endgame” Directors Want a Show Starring Bro Thor, Korg, and Miek

Published

By

Finally, Avengers: Endgame will be released on digital this week. That means fans can now have access to the film’s commentary featuring directors Joe and Anthony Russo, along with co-writer Christopher Markus. During the nearly three-hour movie, the creators discuss the filmmaking process and share fun behind-the-scenes tidbits. But one thing they unveiled during their recording was how much they enjoyed the dynamic amongst Thor, Korg, and Miek in the scene on New Asgard. In fact, they joked they would like to see a series starring that trio.

“I want to see, like, seven seasons of the show of Thor, Korg, and Miek hanging out in this cabin. This feels like a sublime BBC Comedy,” Joe said jokingly.

“I’m very fond of the fact that the magical weapon he took in the entire last movie to get a hold of is a bottle opener now,” Christopher Markus added.

“Also major kudos to our sound design team because that ring on the bottle cap opening is very sweet,” said Anthony Russo.

While it is unlikely we will be getting an entire show based on these three hilarious pals, fans are hoping Korg and Miek will be making their appearance in the upcoming fourth Thor film, Thor: Love and Thunder. Considering Taika Waititi is returning to direct and also happens to voice Korg, there is a good chance we will be seeing the lovable aliens again.

During an interview, Christopher Markus previously spoke about Thor’s journey and praised Taika Waititi for what he did for the character.

“He [Thor] got re-toned by Taika Waititi, [writer] Eric Pearson and [actor] Chris Hemsworth in Thor: Ragnarok, and that’s a gift to us,” Markus expressed. “Basically from his first movie, he’s headed for the throne. He also has all this burden of purpose on him. So his arc in all these films is learning to let go of what people expect of him and embrace what he feels he is. It also turns out that Hemsworth is a really good actor. He is not just gorgeous; he is funny. It has been such a great second half of the MCU for him. And I’m really, really happy that all came about.”

Thor: Love and Thunder is slated to release on November 5th, 2021. Other upcoming Marvel Studios projects include Black Widow on May 1st, 2020; The Eternals on November 6th, 2020; Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on February 12th, 2021; WandaVision and Loki in Spring 2021; with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on May 7th, 2021; What If…? in Summer 2021; and Hawkeye in Fall 2021.

“Thor: Love and Thunder:” Natalie Portman as the Mighty Thor

Published

By

Earlier this week, Marvel fans were elated to learn that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi would return to helm a new Thor film, with the Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con panel adding even more excitement to the endeavor. Fans were given the movie title, Thor: Love and Thunder, as Taika Waititi, Chris Hemsworth, and Tessa Thompson took the stage. And one of the biggest surprises came towards the end of the discussion is Natalie Portman would officially return to the franchise. Not only she would be coming back to the MCU, but she will be playing Jane Foster, adopting the mantle of Thor as well as the power of Mjolnir.

Natalie Portman debuted in the original Thor as Jane Foster back in 2011, reprising her role in Thor: The Dark World (2013). The actress has mostly been absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the past six years, with the latest Avengers: Endgame seeing her first return to the series since the Thor sequel. The movie featured a flashback to the events of The Dark World and, while her character appeared on screen, the film did not ultimately utilize new footage of Natalie Portman.

Though there was no footage being utilized, Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo unveiled that Natalie Portman did provide her voice to the scenes with new recordings.

“A little bit of voice-over when she is talking at a distance. That’s it,” Anthony confirmed with Entertainment Weekly.

The events of Endgame also saw Thor leave New Asgard behind, leaving Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) in charge of the kingdom. While it is unclear exactly what events will unfold to lead towards Jane Foster becoming Thor, it will not be the first time we’ve seen the character take on the role.

In the aftermath of Marvel’s Original Sin storyline, Jane Foster was revealed to be battling cancer and was deemed worthy of wielding Mjolnir when Thor was no longer able to. Jane Foster embraced the duties, dubbing herself, “Thor, the Goddess of Thunder.”

At the premiere of Avengers: Endgame, Natalie Portman appeared and professed her pride over the role.

“It has been so exciting to get to be part of this whole Marvel Universe and see all of those incredible new characters be revealed to audiences every year and, of course, to have woman in science be front and center is incredible, to spread that culture throughout the world,” Natalie Portman expressed with Marvel about being part of the MCU’s foundation.

Before Endgame, the actress was referenced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, with Thor bragging about her many scientific accomplishments, while Ragnarok saw the character confirm that they had, in fact, broken up.

So, are you excited to see Natalie Portman take on the new role? Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on November 5, 2021.

Taika Waititi Officially Signs On to Write and Direct Thor 4

Published

on

By

Back in November 2017, Marvel Studios gave Chris Hemsworth’s Thor a completely new look, vibe, and style, with the action-comedy Thor: Ragnarok. This fun-loving adventure was a major departure from the first two Thor solo movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and fans absolutely loved the changes. Moreover, a large part of this success of the film thanks to writer/director Taika Waititi, who gave audiences hope that the Thor franchise could continue past Avengers: Endgame. Well, now that future is just a little more set in stone. Taika Waititi is officially back for another Thor!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Taika Waititi has signed on to write and helm Thor 4 for Marvel Studios. Still, no release date has been announced at this time.

This is certainly good news for Marvel fans. Especially when Thor: Ragnarok became an instant favorite amongst the MCU faithful, it did come at the expense of another major project that Taika Waititi was involved in. The filmmaker was attached to tell the story of the live-action adaptation of the beloved anime Akira, which was set to hit theaters in 2021. However, there were reportedly some scheduling conflicts between Akira and the proposed Thor 4, along with some script issues with the former. That caused Taika Waititi to shift back to another Marvel Studios film. That said, the hope is that Taika Waititi will return to Akira once he has finished with Thor.

If the production timelines were overlapping, and Akira was coming to the big screen in 2021, that could mean that a fourth Thor movie might be on the way in the next couple of years. Given the immense popularity of Chris Hemsworth and the supporting characters, that would not come as much of a surprise. At this time, the star is expected to reprise his role of Thor for the new film, making him the first character in the MCU to have four solo movies.

“Avengers: Endgame:” Fat Thor Gets an Official Name From Marvel

Published

on

By

The latest crossover event from Marvel Studios has brought about dramatic changes for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including some facts that will drastically alter the future of the franchise. Avengers: Endgame sees two of the “Big Three” taken off the board, with the death of Tony Stark/Iron Man and the “retirement” of Steve Rogers/Captain America, but Thor also has a major change in his status quo as well.

One of the changes to Chris Hemsworth’s character saw his normally chiseled physique being effectively snapped away. And after a time jump, we are introduced to a more robust version of the God of Thunder. While fans have affectionately referred to this character as “Fat Thor,” the special features for Endgame seemingly now gives him an official name: Bro Thor.

The special featurette announced for Avengers: Endgame goes by the name “Bro Thor,” as described:

“His appearance has changed, but his heroism remains! Go behind the scenes to see how Bro Thor was created.”

This name is pretty applicable as it does not just describe Thor’s physical stature, but does more to explain his state of mind instead. After killing Thanos and the five-year time travel, Thor’s priorities shift toward playing Fornite with his best pals Meek and Korg while attempting to drink every bottle of beer in Norway.

And the end of the film sees Thor reignite his heroic fire as he joins the Guardians of the Galaxy. Though it is not clear yet of Chris Hemsworth has actually joined the cast of this popular Marvel series, the actor is hopeful that he will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

“I would play that character [Thor] again. I love it so much, especially if there is something unique to do with it again. I really felt like the last three films were very different each time. And it felt like a totally different character. But I don’t even know when or if they are shooting [Guardians 3],” Chris Hemsworth said.

“I will work with any of those guys. Asgardians of the Galaxy. That is actually great! You might have just got me my next job. Thank you, man.”

Avengers: Endgame hits digital HD on July 30 and Blu-ray/DVD on August 13.

Avengers Star Chris Evans Wants a Buddy Comedy With Chris Hemsworth

Published

on

By

After playing the stoic pillars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the better part of a decade, friends and co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans are now ready to try something a little different with their careers. As for Chris Hemsworth, the actor has already started down this path, even in his later MCU movies, trading in his Asgardian sensibilities for a wild sense of humor. Between his roles in Avengers: Endgame, Ghostbusters, and the upcoming Men in Black reboot, Chris Hemsworth has made clear that he is down for more comedic roles. And it sounds like Chris Evans wants in on the action.

The duo has become good friends during their time with Marvel Studios, beginning with the first Avengers film back in 2012. In fact, they have gotten so close over the years that the God of Thunder star claims that he and Chris Evans cannot do press tours together because they would spend their time “screwing around and none of it will be on topic.”

Though it may sound like a stretch, the story Chris Hemsworth told is very true. Recently, Variety reached out to Chris Evans for a comment on the matter, and the Captain America star confirmed what his buddy had claimed. However, he did not stop there. After acknowledging the fact that the two are not allowed to do press together, Evans said that he would like to break the molds of their MCU characters and star in a buddy comedy with Hemsworth sometime in the future.

“We had too much fun together, truly like kids in school. We were separated because we could not get shit done,” Chris Evans said of his relationship with Hemsworth. Evans later added his own ideas about the next movie they should do together, “I’d love to do one of the ‘80s buddy comedies, where we could shed the characters we’re known for.”

Meanwhile, the turn for Chris Hemsworth has already started.

Even though he is still taking on serious action roles from time to time, Hemsworth is also down for a comedic turn at any time. It is this ability to be both series and hilarious in the same movie that kept the star interested in Thor when he thought he was ready to hang it up. After getting together with Taika Waititi for Thor: Ragnarok, Chris Hemsworth is having more fun with the God of Thunder than ever before. And he also has made it clear that he would play the role again if given the opportunity.

Chris Hemsworth Welcomes Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds to the Marvel Family

With the Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox and other entertainment assets eventually being finalized, the Marvel family now got a little bit bigger.

Recently, Avengers: Endgame star Chris Hemsworth did the decent thing by welcoming the newcomer, making Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds’ addition feel a bit warm.

Chris Hemsworth posted to social media, sharing a new piece of fan art that showcases Deadpool in the God of Thunder’s classic helmet and a much tiner version of Mjolnir. We are expecting to see this be canon in the Avengers: Endgame post-credits stinger.

A post shared by Chris Hemsworth (@chrishemsworth) on

The star loves to have fun with his fellow actors on social media, and we all know about Ryan Reynolds’ antics on the site. We anxiously await the response from Deadpool star.

Knowing that Deadpool could make his potential way to join the MCU should be exciting for fans, and it opens up possibilities for more mature-themed movies and series coming to fruition in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though it seems that the franchise will likely remain under the 20th Century Fox banner.

Disney Chairman Bob Iger previously clarified at a shareholders meeting that the Deadpool 3 would go on. And according to a new report from THR, the franchise would be the only X-Men series to continue without being rebooted.

Last year, Bob Iger also stated that the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters would be transferred under the banner of Marvel Studios, giving Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige access to fan-favorites that have yet to appear in the MCU.

“I think it only makes sense,” Bob Iger told The Hollywood Reporter. “I want to be careful because of what has been communicated to the Fox folks, but I think they know. And it only makes sense for Marvel to be supervised by one entity. There should not be two Marvels.”

We will see if Deadpool and Thor become the new power couple of the MCU in years to come. However, until then, the God of Thunder will return in Avengers: Endgame premiering in theaters on April 26.
