Just a few days ago, a report from Deadline surfaced saying Game of Thrones star Kit Harington would be joining the MCU. Now, it has been officially revealed the actor will be playing Dane Whitman in Marvel’s The Eternals due out next year. His character might be better known to fans as Black Knight, the wielder of Marvel’s iconic Ebony Blade.

The character of Dane Whiteman was first introduced to the Marvel Comics universe in 1967 as the nephew of the villainous Black Knight, who passed the mantle onto Dane and asked him to restore his honor to their legacy. Then Black Knight has joined forces with various superhero teams throughout Marvel Comics history, including the Avengers and the Defenders. Still, it is unclear how Black Knight will fit into The Eternals since he is not an Eternal himself. However, it is no doubt a significant role for Kit Harington to nab coming off the final season of Game of Thrones.

For the uninitiated, Black Knight is another superhero moniker used by more than one character through the vast Marvel history – Dane Whitman just so happens to be the most famous character to pick up the sword. First appearing in The Avengers #47 as himself before becoming Black Knight in The Avengers #48, Whitman’s genius-level intellect with all kinds of gadgetry at his disposal. He is also a master swordsman, and that allows him to put the Ebony Blade – a mystical sword – with ease.

Coincidentally enough, Dane Whitman has also been involved in a romantic relationship with the Eternal Sersi, starring Captain Marvel star Gemma Chan. Her situation is also the first time that a major actress has played two big roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Originally, the famed Ebony Blade was supposed to appear in Doctor Strange, although propmaster Barry Gibbs previously admitted that it was pulled from the final cut from the movie.

“It was [going to be in the film],” Barry Gibbs said when the sold black blade was pointed out. “That’s going to go into a book called the Lexicon of Relics, but the Ebony Blade was taken out of the script. I don’t know why. Again, as things evolved, it was not pertinent to the script. Things just moved on.”

The Eternals is set to arrive on November 6, 2020. Are you excited to see Kit Harington join the MCU?
