Director Joss Whedon Calls Henry Cavill the Best Superman Since Christopher Reeve

Recently, in what is surely not going to be a flame-war-igniting statement, Avengers and Justice League director Joss Whedon through down the gauntlet, with a post proclaiming that Henry Cavill is the best Superman since Christopher Reeve.

The director posted the statement to Twitter, saying: “[Henry] Cavill is a GREAT Superman – definitely the best since Reeves and could take the top spot with the right material/barber.”

01. SUPER G.O.A.T.

If that was not enough to invite all sorts of trolls out of the woodwork (both DCEU fans who hated Whedon’s Justice League, and fans of Marvel who hate Zack Snyder’s DCEU), Joss Whedon also committed the cardinal sin of misspelling Christopher Reeve’s name as “Reeves” in his original tweet.

Well, as we can probably expect, that was enough to open the floodgates.

Simple. Effective. Shade Level: 110%

We feel you, bro, even if we do not quite understand you.

Um, we are not sure what this picture is meant to convey, exactly, but we do agree that Henry Cavill ‘s Superman needs some better material under him.

Obviously, this issue was too big for just DC and Marvel references.

…because clearly the Internet does, Mr. Whedon.

So say all #ReleaseTheSnyderCut fanatics!

Ouch. It is really saying something when online fans don’t think you are good enough for the DCEU!

From the mouths of babes…

The DC Movie Universe continues with Shazam! on April 5, Joker on October 4, Birds of Prey (and the Fabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020, and The Batman on June 25, 2021.

Jason Momoa Said Henry Cavill Is “Absolutely Not” Leaving Superman Role

Still, there has been no official words as to whether or not Henry Cavill will be vacating his role of Superman in the live-action DC universe. One of his Justice League co-stars Jason Momoa seems to have a pretty definitive answer in regards to the Man of Steel’s future.

On last Wednesday night, during the red carpet premiere of Aquaman, Jason Momoa was asked if Henry Cavill was indeed leaving the franchise. And he quickly shut it down.

“I just talked to Henry,” Momoa said to ET. “He is absolutely not [leaving the character]. Henry loves the character. He is not. One hundred percent.”

Certainly, this is good news for DC fans, but it also raises a couple of eyebrows.

Just a few days ago, Momoa was asked a very similar question by HuffPost regarding Superman star Henry Cavill and Batman star Ben Affleck going forward. The actor responded by saying he understood if they were ready to move on.

“If they are both out, then listen: It’s just the place they are in their careers,” Momoa said. “I mean, how many Henry has done? Three? Yeah, it’s like, you want to move on.”

Those responses are very different within less than a week. That’s not to say Jason Momoa doesn’t know what he is talking about, but his recent chat with Henry Cavill must have really laid things out clearly because to say he was confident in his co-star’s future would be an understatement.

The questions surrounding Henry Cavill’s future began back in September. A report was released online stating that Cavill was on his way out as Superman. It means there was not another Superman movie on the way and that Cavill had become frustrated with Warner Bros. after a dispute regarding a cameo in Shazam!

Shortly after that, Cavill’s manager shared a cryptic message on social media suggesting that Cavill was not necessarily done with the role. Henry Cavill only added to the speculation when he shared a video on Instagram playing with a Superman toy.

Later that day, Warner Bros. said in an official statement on the matter.

“While no decisions have been made in regards to any upcoming Superman films. We have always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged.”

What If Henry Cavill Suits Up As Captain America

With Marvel Studio’s Avengers 4 on the horizon, fans have long theorized that the sure-to-be blockbuster could be the last time for Chris Evans suiting up as Steve Rogers. But when he does eventually decide to hang up the shield, who would be the proper replacement?

According to one fan artist, in particular, Justice League star Henry Cavill could be that suitable choice. Recently, the fan artist extraordinaire BossLogic gave us a look at what the current Man of Steel would look like as Captain America’s Chris Evans. Quite frankly, it’s pretty spot-on look.

Henry Cavill is no longer a stranger to the superhero genre as he’s appeared in three movies for Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe – Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and last year’s Justice League. The time he played Clark Kent, however, might be nearing a close as reports surfaced last month. From there, Warner Bros. was considering shuttering the Superman franchise as they seemed to take their universe in other direction. Henry Cavill reportedly decided to exit his role when talked about a cameo in the upcoming Shazam! movie broke down.

“There is a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn’t work,” THR reported. Another source hinted that this is just one big moment as Warner Bros. has been attempting to “reset” the direction of DC Films. However, during an investor called earlier this month, Warner Media CEO John Stankey backed up the idea. He said, “Some of our franchises, in particular DC, we all think we can do better.”

While waiting for more information on his character in the DCEU, Henry Cavill has debuted a role as Geralt in Netflix’s adaptation of video game series The Witcher.

As for Captain America, even how further he goes, fans were heartbroken when Chris Evans posted to social media after wrapping his final scenes for Avengers 4. Evans shared a heartfelt goodbye to his character, potentially signaling the end of an era.

“Officially wrapped on Avengers 4,” Chris Evans wrote. “It’s an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last eight years has been my honor. To everyone in front of the camera or behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”

Yeah, Cap fans, what do you think about this idea? Would Henry Cavill make an adequate replacement for Chris Evans as Captain America? If not him, who do you believe would be good in the role? Let us know in the comments!
