James Gunn Explains Why Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Missed Out on Comic-Con

Published

During the epic Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on last Saturday, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige blew fans’ minds as the studio released a massive Phase 4 slate. That gave fans a lot of exciting TV series and movies as well. However, there was one announcement that was notably missing from this lineup. The much-anticipated movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, did not make its way onto the slate, but fans should not worry. Recently, director James Gunn took to Twitter with the explanation why.

On Saturday evening, a fan asked why there was not an announcement for Guardians Vol. 3 at the presentation. Then James Gunn replied that he was finishing The Suicide Squad before heading back the Guardians.

“Sorry to disappoint,” the filmmaker replied. “Guardians Vol. 3 IS happening. But I’m finishing The Suicide Squad first.”

As fans will recall, earlier this year, Marvel Studios reinstated James Gunn as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He would be pulling a bit of double-duty helming both Guardians and The Suicide Squad, which Gunn had signed on to with Warner Bros. before his return to Disney. At the time, a report from Deadline also noted that things got a bit complicated with his return.

“Gunn’s return to the Guardians Vol. 3 got complicated when he signed on to write and direct The Suicide Squad sequel for Warner Bros. and DC,” early reports said. “Marvel Studios has agreed to commence production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after James Gunn completes Suicide Squad 2.”

Since then, we have come to learn a decent amount about The Suicide Squad. Actor David Dastmalchian (Ant-Man and the Wasp) will play Polka-Dot Man alongside Idris Elba (Avengers: Infinity War) who is rumored for the role of a classic DC Comics character, Bronze Tiger. Meanwhile, John Cena (Bumblebee) is rumored to be playing Peacemaker, a.k.a. Christopher Smith. And it has also since been clarified that the movie is definitely not a sequel.

Producer Peter Safran later referred to the project as a “total reboot.”

“So it is The Suicide Squad, and I think people should be extremely excited about it,” Safran previously told JoBlo. “It is everything you’d hope from a James Gunn script. I think that says a lot and promises a lot. And I know we will deliver a lot.”

While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 did not make it to the Phase 4 Marvel slate, we still do have plenty to look forward to. Other upcoming Marvel Studios projects include Black Widow on May 1, 2020; The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series in Fall of 2020; The Eternals on November 6, 2020; Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on February 12, 2021; WandaVison and Loki in Spring 2021; Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on May 7, 2021; What If…? in Summer 2021; Hawkeye in Fall 2021; and Thor: Love and Thunder on November 2021.

Dave Bautista Says Marvel Studios Doesn’t See Worth in Doing Drax Standalone Film

Published

on

By

Dave Bautista is beloved for his portrayal of Drax the Destroyer in Marvel Studios’ hit Guardians of the Galaxy films, but he’s also a fan favorite off the movie set. One of the biggest reasons is that the actor never hesitates to share what is on his mind. Recently, he responded to a fan’s proposal of him playing a Batman villain with quite a bit of enthusiasm. Bautista then shared a story regarding that and elaborated a bit on his interest for the superhero genre. During that tweet, the actor said that Marvel Studios did not seem to see the worth in a Drax solo film.

“Point is I’m freaking love comic book characters, and I want a standalone,” he wrote on Twitter. “@MarvelStudios does not see the worth in #Drax or possibly myself or both, but I am not giving up. I missed out a DC project because of scheduling conflicts, but hopefully, there is other characters and opportunities.”

It seems that Dave Bautista is all for a Drax standalone movie, but even if that does not happen, he is not done with comic book characters by a longshot, as he also addressed the possibility of taking part in a DC project. Dave Bautista mentioned that he missed out on that due to scheduling conflicts, though he didn’t reveal what the project was.

Dave Bautista has been quite busy on the Marvel front over the past few years, so it could have been anything during the time between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Avengers: Endgame, as he was involved in some capacity in both of those as well as Guardians Vol. 2 and Infinity War.

The only current DCEU film that was shot before that was the original Man of Steel, so the role Dave Bautista is referencing could have been in movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Justice League, Wonder Woman, and Shazam!, which have all hit theaters since then.

Another potential role is that he is referring to a movie that is currently in production, and the most interesting project is The Suicide Squad. The film is being directed by James Gunn, who also helmed the Guardians films. James Gunn took the movie on during his ouster from Disney, although he’d eventually return to Marvel and the House of Mouse for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Dave Bautista will finish The Suicide Squad first though, so hopefully, we will get a cameo from him at least in the movie. But who knows? Maybe he will show up somewhere else in the DC universe after his run at Marvel is done.

Marvel Star Dave Bautista Wants to Play a Batman Villain

Published

on

By

Dave Bautista is a fixture of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to his role as Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. The thing is, that does not mean he is opposed to playing a different sort of character over DC’s corner of the cinematic universe, and definitely, he is into one specific idea centered on Batman’s world. The Dark Knight has one of the most iconic lineups of villains in comics, so the options are many, and Dave Bautista could probably bring several of them to life in a unique way. However, thanks to a recommendation from B.J. Mendelson, now we know one villain. That’s Dave Bautista who seems to be behind all the way.

The discussion kicked off when B.J. Mendelson took to Twitter, sharing his thoughts on the new Joker trailer.

“Nope. Still not feeling the ‘Joker’ movie,” he wrote. “If you are going to give a Batman villain a standalone movie, it should be that Matt Hagen Clayface starring @DaveBautista.”

The Drax actor then shared that post, expressing Mendelson’s enthusiasm for the idea. He wrote, “I’m going to enthusiastically agree with you on that!”

Actually, Matt Hagen is the second person to use the Clayface name in the comics. The character is much less well known than the original Basil Karlo, though fans mostly have known him of the Batman: Animated Series, which used the Hagen name but had a story more based on Karlo. Either way, a Bautista Clayface obviously has us intrigued, and we are all for it.

Dave Bautista also took a second to address the Joker movie. He cannot wait to see it, despite not really connecting it to Batman.

“Odd thing is I am dying to see it, but my brain hasn’t connected it to Batman at all,” wrote Bautista. “There is a disconnect for some reason, but I can’t wait to see Joaquin [Phoenix] as The Joker. Look interestingly dark and grounded in the vain of The Dark Knight series. I’m in!”

Dave Bautista has already proven how capable he’s at bringing comic book characters to life on the big screen, as his tenure in the MCU has been universally celebrated. Drax The Destroyer is a fan-favorite member of the Guardians, with Bautista constantly chewing the scenery and popping in one-liners. However, the character also has a heart, and we peel the layers of trauma and grief during each of his appearance on the big screen.

dave bautista

And just like that, Dave Bautista has thrown his name in the ring to play Clayface for the DC live-action universe. But we have to wait and see what DC and Warner Bros. will do with Batman and his supervillains when the characters remain unknown, as the contents of Matt Reeves’ The Batman is still being kept under wraps. However, there are a ton of characters that have not made it into the shared universe, and Clayface could be a great choice cinematically. Bat-fans out there would be thrilled to see Dave Bautista pivot his Drax character over to the DC side of things. In the meantime, the upcoming DC film is Joker, which hits theaters on October 4.

“Avengers: Endgame” Writers Reveals Gamora’s Post-Endgame Fate

Avengers: Endgame | Thanos & Gamora Fan Art by RidiSelmani (on DeviantArt)

After the events of Avengers: Endgame, the fate of Gamora (Zoe Saldana) has been a big question mask. Even though fans have debated whether the character was dusted in Iron Man’s (Robert Downey Jr.) snap at the end of the movie, it appears that the time-traveling Zen-Whoberian is alive and well. That is, of course, according to Avengers: Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

Earlier in the day, the Endgame writers had their very own panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. And while there, Markus and McFeely confirmed that to their knowledge, the time-traveling Gamora from 2014 survived Tony Stark’s snap. They explained that the character slipped away, and anticipated her story picking back up in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

It should be explained that the version of Gamora that traveled through time in Endgame was a version of the character before we saw even in Guardians of the Galaxy, hence the reason some thought she might have been snapped. At that time, Gamora was still technically part of Thanos’ force.

Earlier last month, Avengers: Endgame filmmakers, the Russo Brothers, skirted around the question, playing coy and not hitting the question head-on.

“This argument could be that Tony Stark wished away all the evil,” Joe Russo said. “Was she evil or just the enemy? Is she still alive? Who knows? That is a story for another time.”

“And if Tony wanted to get rid of Thanos and his entire army, was she still part of his army?” Anthony essentially went on to echo that sentiment.

The timeline is still a bit murky when it comes to James Gunn’s work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, although it is fully expected he was well aware of the events of the last two Avengers films when writing the script. The director did, after all, eventually get credit as an executive producer on the movies. Either way, the Guardians threequel is shaping up to be a jam-packed affair, with some other reports that suggested characters like Moondragon, the High Evolutionary, and Lylla would be making an appearance.

So, do you think the Guardians will run into Gamora in Vol. 3? Share with us in the comments!

Avengers: Endgame launches on digital July 30 ahead of a home media release on August 13. Spider-Man: Far From Home is still in theaters while Captain Marvel hit digitally May 28 and landed in Blu-ray collections June 11.

“Guardians of the Galaxy:” What Zac Efron Would Look Like as Adam Warlock

Published

on

By

As Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is getting closer to its pre-production stage with Marvel Studios rolling into Phase 4, casting rumors and speculation are going to be aplenty. As James Gun has promised after his return as director, one new character coming to the franchise for this third installment will be Adam Warlock. The character was also teased in the post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 but an actor has not yet been cast for the role.

Recently, graphic designer BossLogic has shared an idea of his own: Zac Efron as Adam Warlock.

This artwork does not stop at simply being a suggestion. BossLogic went ahead and imagined what Efron would look like as Marvel’s next big cosmic character. You can check out his rendition of Efron as Adam Warlock below.

“We had a lot of pre-established characters and sometimes characters from books, again, being a comic book fan. But I don’t want to see a literal interpretation of a comic book I have read a hundred times because I don’t want to go to a theater and know exactly what is going on to happen,” Avengers co-director Joe Russo shared when asked why Adam Warlock as omitted from the movies.

“As for me, it kind of ruins the experience of going to a movie. Sometimes we will take the arcs that have been assigned to different characters in the books and reassign them to other characters. Or we are just taking inspiration from the books and really deviating from the storyline, in which case, the characters are not applicable to what we are trying to do in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Meanwhile, Adam Warlock casting might still be a year or more away as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 likely will not go into production until sometime in 2020, at the earliest. The film doesn’t yet have an official release date, but it will likely arrive in May of 2021 or 2022. Stay tuned!

Who do you think should play Adam Warlock? Share with us in the comments!

Only Five Movies Have Grossed Over $2 Billion and Zoe Saldana Is In Three Of Them

Published

on

By

Now that Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame has crossed the massive $2 billion threshold, there is a new queen of the box office. Out of the five highly-anticipated movies to ever make $2 billion worldwide, Avengers star Zoe Saldana has appeared in three of them. Alongside her role as Gamora in the Avengers: Endgame ($2.19B) and last year’s Infinity War ($2.04B), the actress also played Neytiri, the lead in James Cameron’s Avatar ($2.78B). With Avatar 2 set for release next year and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 the year or two later, Zoe Saldana has at least two more billion-dollar films on the immediate horizon.

Just last summer, fan favorite Zoe Saldana was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. At her awards ceremony, she gave a heartfelt speech about chasing after the goals and aspirations.

“Having a dream is just step one,” said Saldana. “Step two: sleeves up, hard work, passion, persistence, and perseverance. Fail often and fail forward. If at first, you do not succeed, you dust yourself off and try again. I learned to love what I do and do what I do, and that’s been my mantra. From Burger King commercials to Law and Order episodic, to a ballet film, I got to be a pirate, an INS officer, a xenolinguist on the Enterprise. And I got to be an alien warrior – well, multiple alien warriors.”

(Photo: Marvel)

Thanks to Guardians, Avatar, and the time in J.J. Abram’ Star Trek franchises, Zoe Saldana continued her speech by praising the science fiction genre that helped to turn her into a household name.

“Science fiction is a universe where a person like me who’s unimaginable is imaginable by so many filmmakers like J.J. Abrams, James Cameron, and James Gunn,” she told Variety. “So I got to really flourish in this genre. I got to be brave and strong, and I got to play characters that were not only the daughter, the wife, or the girlfriend. I was a warrior, and I was also relevant to the storyline. And I am very proud of the path that I have chosen for myself by avoiding falling into stereotypical boxes.”

Avengers: Endgame is now showing in theaters while Infinity War is streaming on Netflix.

“Avengers: Endgame” Includes an Surprisingly Awesome Guardians of the Galaxy Cameo

Published

on

By

After long waiting what felt like forever for the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to arrive in theaters, Avengers: Endgame definitely did just that, breaking hordes of records in its massive box office debut this weekend. Not only did the film bring prominence back to the box office in a year where it has been down significantly, but it also brought back the beloved characters who were all lost after Thanos’ snap at the end of Infinity War. Some of these returns happened as expected, but some were a pretty substantial surprise, including this Guardians of the Galaxy cameo that fans hardly noticed.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers.

In the final scenes of Avengers: Endgame, when Sam Wilson/Falcon delivered is very best “On your left,” all of the characters who were lost after the Snap began appearing through portals from Doctor Strange and the other sorcerers. These portals then started getting bigger, and massive armies stepped through from different individual Marvel franchises. The Wakandans marched, as did the sorcerers, with Asgardians, and even the Ravagers. And at this moment, if we notice, there is a character we probably missed in Endgame: Howard the Duck.

Yes, he is hard to spot. But actually Howard the Duck is lined up amongst the rest of the Ravagers when they march on Thanos. If you watch the film again and start paying close attention when Wasp shows up on the screen for the first time, and you take a look to Wasp’s right, you will see a blue alien. And just in front of/below that alien is none other than Howard, ready to do his part saving the universe.

It is also worth noting that Kraglin should be in this scene somewhere, even though we have not just found him yet. In the credits, Sean Gunn is also listed as playing Rocket’s motion-capture and Kraglin as well.

While Howard the Duck came as a surprise for fans, Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo had wanted to include him for a while. The character was initially supposed to have a small role in Infinity War last year.

“Howard the Duck was really in one draft of the script,” co-director Anthony said last year. “He actually had a good scene. So we were going to cameo with [The Hangover and Community star] Ken Jeong, with Howard the Duck. That’s a much-beloved scene by us, but it just did not end up fitting at all.”

Do you catch the Howard the Duck cameo in Endgame? The film is now playing in theaters.

“Avengers: Endgame:” What Groot Says at the End of the Film

Published

on

By

Last week Avengers: Endgame finally hit theaters, already breaking box office records and is considered one of the best movies in the franchise. Many fans have even seen the film multiple times, but since Earth does not offer Groot as an elective as Asgard does, everyone is still wondering what Groot said at the end of Endgame.

Warning: Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame ahead.

At the end of the film, it was revealed that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) would be going off to join the Guardians of the Galaxy (or maybe the “Asgardians of the Galaxy” as he so hilariously put it), there was some mild debate about who the leader of the group would be: Star-Lord/Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) or Thor. Their fellow Guardians suggested a knife fight to settle the debate, and Groot chimed in. According to a recent Reddit post to r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers, Groot says the following:

“Yes, I like knives.”

Pretty straight-forward! Certainly, it does not pack the same punch as his final words in Infinity War, which were previously revealed to be a simple, “Dad,” to Rocket Raccoon as he was turning to dust. Considering the last time we see Groot in Endgame is infinitely sillier than the last time in Infinity War, it is no surprise it was a comical line.

Besides, the Reddit post shared by u/RiverFenixBen reveals much more information, including details about cameo of Stan Lee, with how the funeral scene was shot, and the reasoning behind no post-credits sequence. You can read the full post here.

Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye/Ronin, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Tess Thompson as Valkyrie, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, and Vin Diesel as Groot.

Avengers: Endgame is now in theaters. Other MCU films include Captain Marvel, which is still playing in select theaters, and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which swings into theaters on July 2.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” Reportedly Starts Filming in 2020

Published

on

By

Even though it still does not have an official release date, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could end up arriving in theaters sooner than we thought.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, the third Guardians movie is currently scheduled to start filming in 2020, ahead of its previously-reported February 2021 production start date.

As it stands now, Guardians 3 will be in a unique situation due to the fluidity of James Gunn’s role. Before his firing, the production had been scheduled to start this year in anticipation of a 2020 release. Since James Gunn was let go and subsequently rehired, it is understandable why they delayed the production by a full calendar year, at least.

Should that reports prove accurate, Guardians 3 would likely end up with one of Marvel Studios’ three dates in 2021 – February 12, May 7, or November 5. Since 2021 still looks a bit too soon for another team-up movie, Marvel would presumably give their middle date to the Gunn-directed film, in an attempt help launch the summer box office.

Previously, Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan revealed that she might have had a peek at the script of the sequel, though she would not go into any details past the fact she has read it.

“Our director will not be with us any longer, but we’re excited to continue the Guardians of the Galaxy story and to keep delivering to fans,” Gillan shared to People Magazine. “That is the most important thing. I do not have any details as to when [Guardians Vol. 3 will come out] but there is a script in existence. And I may have had a little teeny peek, but I cannot say anything.”

Earlier this year, the Guardians co-star Sean Gunn admitted he had not seen the script for this threequel yet, though he has spoken to James about the film’s plot, even in the wake of his brother’s reinstatement as a director at Marvel Studios.

“It’s safe to say that I have had a conversation about it,” Sean Gunn said. “I have not actually read the script or the treatment, but I have talked to my brother about it, that means I need to be very careful with what I say.”

In the meantime, Avengers: Endgame is now in theaters and Spider-Man: Far From Home will follow on July 2.

“Avengers: Endgame” New Look at Rocket Raccoon’s Classic Comics Costume

Published

on

By

The second full-length Avengers: Endgame trailer is finally out, showing Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) saves the universe from the Mad Titan (star Josh Brolin) himself. Though the glimpse of Rocket might not have shown everyone’s beloved “rabbit” going toe-to-toe with Thanos, the trailer did include a new shot that makes it clear Rocket now gets a new suit for himself.

You can take a closer look below.

(Photo: Marvel)

In fact, it is a comic-accurate suit from Marvel’s cosmic heyday.

Previously revealed in the Super Bowl spot, the latest trailer has a better look at Rocket’s appearance, which includes a pair of goggles this time around. The Rocket Raccoon’s costume comes straight from Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s Guardians of the Galaxy (2008) story – a run that is heavily influenced the Guardians trajectory in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

(Photo: Marvel Comics)

As it stands now, Rocket Raccoon is the lone member of the Guardians alive as every else turned into dust – or in the case of Gamora, she was murdered by Thanos – in Avengers: Infinity War. While the fan-favorite character previously paired up with Thor (star Chris Hemsworth) and Groot (Vin Diesel) on a mission in Infinity War, Rocket Raccoon is now seen here entering battle on the shoulder of War Machine (star Don Cheadle).

After Avengers: Endgame hits theaters, the future of the Guardians is still uncertain, although Disney and Marvel Studios president has confirmed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will happen, with the return of director James Gunn.

Captain Marvel stars the Academy Award® winner Brie Larson (Carol Danvers), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou (Korath). Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan (Minn-Erva), Lee Pace (Ronan), Rune Temte. Algenis Perez Soto, Kenneth Mitchell (Joseph Danvers), with Clark Gregg (Phill Coulson), Jude Law, and Goose the cat.

Captain Marvel is now in theaters. Other upcoming MCU films include Avengers: Endgame on April 26, and Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 5.

“Guardians of the Galaxy 3:” Disney Reportedly Rehires Director James Gunn

Published

on

By

Months and months after firing James Gunn for his decade-old inappropriate tweets, Disney now has reportedly reversed their decision regarding Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. After all, on Friday afternoon, the House of Mouse and Marvel Studios had changed their minds and officially brought James Gunn back to helm Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Deadline broke the news, reporting that the decision was actually made months ago following conversations between Disney and Marvel Studios executives.

According to the latest report, Walt Disney Studios president Alan F. Horn, who also had a hand in James Gunn’s initial firing last summer, met with the filmmaker several times after he was removed from the position. The chairman of Disney was persuaded to change his mind after seeing Gunn’s public apology and his subsequent handling of the situation. Also, this case of Gunn was probably helped by his cast and peers, who were all vocal online and even in interviews defending the director.

At present, James Gunn had already completed his script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has confirmed that the film would use his script. Meanwhile, other directors were the subject of rumors, suggesting that Marvel was looking to replace James Gunn rather quickly. But that clearly was not the case.

However, the only complicated part of this entire situation is the involvement of James Gunn with Warner Bros. and DC.

After leaving Marvel, the director signed on to write and direct Suicide Squad 2. The film production is set to begin this year, and Marvel has agreed let Gunn complete his work on the DC project before heading back to the Guardians franchise. Recently, the roster and working title of Suicide Squad 2 have been revealed.

As for James Gunn, since his firing, he has kept things quiet on the social network for a time, but that changed after the Disney and Marvel Studios broke out in a collective cry of joy after they reversed the decision. Eventually, the filmmaker was back to Twitter to share a simple message of thanks for everyone who supported him in the recent months.

So, James Gunn will still helm the Suicide Squad sequel for Warner Bros. and DC before returning to Marvel to begin production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

What do you think of this decision from Disney? Are you excited to see James Gunn back in the director’s chair for Guardians 3? Share with us in the comments!
